In Brief:

Statistics Without Borders is seeking volunteers for project 254, 2024 UNILAG Data Science Boot Camp, which is being conducted for the Statistics Department at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). In 2023 SWB assisted UNILAG in the development of a Data Science curriculum and the production of a two-week Data Science Bootcamp.  The goal of project 254 is to aid UNILAG in the production of a two-week training course in Data Science to be given August 19-30, 2024.  Specifically the goal is to secure volunteer webinar speakers and tutors for the two-week course, to produce hands-on exercises for the training course participants, to train the tutors to guide the Bootcamp participants through the exercises, and to present the webinars and exercises during the Bootcamp.

Introduction:

The UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS (UNILAG) is a Federal Tertiary Institution established in 1962 by an Act of Parliament of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as enacted in the University of Lagos Act l967 (as amended), Chapter U9 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004 with its main campus at Akoka, Yoba, Lagos, Nigeria. The Statistics Department at UNILAG is part of the Faculty of Science.

The Department has over 100 undergraduates, more than 50 master and doctoral postgraduate students, and about 20 academic and adjunct staff researching and working with collaborators both within and outside the university.

The University of Lagos Department of Statistics is planning a to repeat  a 2-week intensive summer program in Data Science. The program will open to students, government and industry professionals who could benefit from the use of data science methods and tools. Topics to be included are:  Data Analytics, Data Visualization, Data Mining, Databases (SQL) , Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Ethics.  Python, Tableau and Power BI will be taught.  The focus of the Bootcamp will be training in Data Science tools that the participants can use after completion of the Bootcamp.

The products of this project will be:

 1)  Development of webinars and training exercises for each of the Bootcamp topics and computer languages.

 2) Training of the SWB volunteers to be Bootcamp tutors.

 3) Aid to UNILAG in the daily schedule for the Bootcamp.

 4)  Participation in the Bootcamp as webinar speakers and tutors.

There are four ways to contribute this project:

A: Webinar Lecturer:  August 19-30, 2024 9am-5pm WAT

Nine topics, and three languages are planned. Each lecturer will be responsible for approximately one day of the Bootcamp including: one to two hours of lecture, accompanying exercises to be performed by participants during the Bootcamp, training and supervision of SWB tutors who will guide the participants through the exercises.

Lecturers will train the SWB tutors to guide the Bootcamp participants through the exercises.  We expect this training to occur during July 2024.

Webinars will be on-line; no travel is required. If you cannot give a webinar but have examples of training exercises that you can share, they will be greatly appreciated.

B: Webinar Tutor:  August 19-30, 2024 9am-5pm WAT

Tutors will collaborate with a Lecturer who will train them in the content of the exercises. Each tutor will be responsible for approximately one day of the Bootcamp per topic. Tutors may volunteer for more than one topic.

C: On-Line Tutoring Methods Teacher:

Training for the SWB tutors on the mechanics of conducting on-line Data Science exercises is needed.  This training would take place during July 2024.
